Start small.
A short diagnostic, usually two to three weeks. I talk to your people, read the numbers and look at the systems. You get a plain-English view of what's working, what isn't and what I'd do first. If that's all you need, we stop there.
Mark Reed · Fractional CTO, CIO and Head of AI
I work with CEOs and COOs of mid-market companies as their technology and AI leader, a few days a week. I sit on your leadership team, I'm accountable to you, and I stay for as long as it's useful.
Thirty years, three continents, from Sydney trading floors to Bath start-ups. My job, mostly, is translating between the board and the engineers.
Costs creep, suppliers multiply and nobody can quite say what the money buys. I make the spend visible, tie it to the business plan and stop what isn't earning its place.
I help you choose the two or three uses that will move a number, put sensible governance around them and get the first one live within 90 days. Then your team takes it on.
Technology due diligence from either side of the table, and an integration plan that finds the savings and the risks before day one.
Usually the team is fine and the operating model isn't. I set clear ownership, a simple way to decide what gets funded, and a delivery rhythm the board can see into.
75% off cloud hosting costs. As CTO of Clausematch, a RegTech scale-up, while the platform kept growing.
5,000 people moved to Microsoft 365 in six months. A modern-workplace programme for a large UK employer.
About 10% cost savings identified before a deal closed. Technology due diligence and the integration plan for a major acquisition.
25 engineers using AI in their daily work, with governance the business signed off. At Zapmap, the first proposal through a new investment committee I helped design.
Website conversion up by a third. At Swoop, a new page layout we shipped lifted conversion by 33.8%.
20% fewer incidents while delivering more than £80m of change. As CIO for Markets at Lloyds Banking Group.
If any of this sounds familiar, email me. I read and answer every message myself.

Typically one to three days a week, on monthly rolling terms. I'm part of your leadership team, not a consultant at a distance.
No vendor deals, no commissions, no reselling. My only interest is your outcome.
I don't write your production code, run code reviews or hand you a sixty-page deck. I'm most useful at a whiteboard with your team.
The aim is a team and an operating model that don't need me. When that's true, I go.
Thinking about it? A short email is enough to start.
Email meI trained as an engineer at the University of Bristol, wrote software, then joined PwC in 1997 as the firm's 'internet guy'. In 2001 I moved to Sydney and spent nearly ten years at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, finishing as CIO for Institutional Banking and Markets, with a spell in Edinburgh along the way.
Back in the UK I ran IT change at Nationwide and Lloyds Banking Group, then co-founded MyLife Digital in Bath, a consent and privacy software company. Since then I've been CTO at Clausematch, a RegTech business, Group CTO at Swoop and Condor Ventures in adventure travel, and CTO at Zapmap, the UK's EV-charging map, with advisory work through Digital Advisory in between.
I'm Canadian, British and Australian, and I live in Bath.
I still build software. Designing and shipping my own apps for iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac keeps my judgement current: I know what AI-assisted development can and can't do because I use it every week.
Meeting reminders for people with time blindness. I built it because I needed it. Three calm stages, get ready, get set, go, so a meeting never arrives as a surprise. Free, for iPhone and Apple Watch, and private by design.

A native Apple companion for the Mem note-taking service: capture on Apple Watch, listen in CarPlay, sync with Apple Reminders.
An app for rediscovering what you already know, laying your notes out in space using the classical art of memory.
A few lines is enough. I'll reply myself.
